LIMITATIONS OF THE HUNTER LESSON PLAN FORMAT AND OTHER TEACHING RECIPES

The Madeline Hunter lesson plan format was popular in the late 1970's and 1980's and is still being used today (Hunter, 1982; Hunter, 2004). Hunter's original purpose here was to provide a platform that would enable educators to have conversations about effective teaching. However, it quickly moved away from being a conversational platform to becoming a teaching recipe. Schools and teacher preparation programs began to use the seven elements described in Hunter's model of instruction to observe and evaluate teachers. Just Follow the Recipe. The Hunter Direct Instruction Model (HDIM) is...

"The Play's the thing wherein we will expand the consciousness of the community" (Vitor Pordeus)

Hamlet, the famous tragedy written by Shakespeare in the early seventeenth century was the play chosen by the cultural psychiatrist Vitor Pordeus to work on social mental health as a kind of "vaccine of madness"-an expression used by Vitor himself. Nothing more current than bringing up the disturbances of the protagonist watching a killer take the throne of his kingdom. The interpretation of tragedy as a device for accessing the unconscious is the tool used by the founder of Teatro Clínica Therezinha Moraes to treat the community psyche through staging and art. In my trajectory of social...

Masters of fate or victims of circumstance? Connecting communication centers with locus of control

Longstanding research correlates locus of control (LOC)— the sense of self-empowerment (internal orientation) versus feeling influenced by events others control (external orientation)—with self-motivation, persistence, high academic achievement, and workplace success. In study1, undergraduate peer tutors (n = 31) at a midsize, doctoral-granting, minority-serving university completed a variant of the teacher locus of control (TLOC) survey, which measures the degree of internal/external LOC orientation in educational settings. In study 2, communication center supervisors (n = 12) and...

Locus of Control Synergies in New Language Learning and Cultural Adaptation: A Communication Center Perspective

This study documents how students learning English as a second language exhibit various levels of internal and external locus of control in their learning process. Focus group interviews were conducted with 21 non-native English speakers from seven nations enrolled in an intensive English language learning program at a mid-size research university in the southeastern United States. All participants engaged regularly in conversational practice at the university's oral communication center. Participants were asked about the processes they used for learning English and what their sources of...

Úvaha o dejinách vedy a techniky v kontexte filozofie globálneho vzdelávania

Reflective Practice International and Multidisciplinary Perspectives Fostering learner autonomy and critical reflection through digital video-journals in a university foreign language course

Many studies have documented the benefits of incorporating reflec- tive journals into foreign language education at university level, though the pedagogic tendency has been to utilise these valuable learning resources to enhance students' written language skills. This study focuses on how the production of a digital reflective journal in video format can assist in the improvement of oral language abilities in tertiary students of Spanish as a foreign language. With spoken lan- guage as the driving vehicle for this assessment task, the course coordinator and educator in charge aimed to...

The Way of Talmud ‫הש"ס‬ דרך‬ Exploring Talmud Study as a Spiritual Practice

Talmud, among Jewish texts, is uniquely suited to be studied as a spiritual practice. Given the complexity of the term and the ambivalence with which it is used in Jewish spaces, a definition of spiritual practice is offered, comprising four main characteristics: spiritual practices must include an element of "flow," a focus on making the mundane sacred, an encounter with something greater than yourself, and faith in the practice. This approach to teaching was then tested in a class on a university campus, where I explored how to implement the idea of Talmud study into a class about a...
