Starring Dante

This essay offers an example of a guiding thread in my own research on and teaching of Dante's Commedia. Specifically, I will follow a strand that leads us from Dante's encounter with the "bella scola" of classical poets in Inferno Canto 4, through a key scene in the Purgatorio where Dante and his guide Virgil meet the late classical poet Statius, to the remarkable six-canto suite in the Heaven of the Stars, sign of Gemini, in which Dante-poet has Dante-character undergo a series doctrinal tests on the theological virtues. His successful response to the challenges posed by the apostles...

A large part of the original writing was an attached paper by Dr. John Afele proposing an African Knowledge Bank, which is linked from...

Italian Open Education: virtual reality immersions for the language classroom

This case study describes the development of a free-to-use online platform for storing, sharing, and accessing 360-degree Virtual Reality (VR) videos. Although in the past VR was mostly used for gaming purposes, in recent years it has become increasingly popular in numerous areas, including education. In the field of language learning, little is still known about the development and use of open VR materials as well as their affordances and constraints. The current project addresses this gap by illustrating the practical steps taken to develop an open education platform, by investigating...

Distinguishing (the) Right from Wrong: Knowledge, Curriculum, and Intellectual Responsibility

Given the political Right's attacks on U.S. academics as too liberal, we broach questions about knowledge production and curriculum development. We first explore how the Right has used arguments for freedom of speech and ideological diversity to undermine higher education's mission in the hope of polluting the public sphere with ideas that are deeply erroneous and destructive. We then describe the mission of higher education to serve as a quality control mechanism for ideas in the public sphere and reaffirm the importance of academic freedom in safeguarding that mission. We end by calling...
