The Devil's Crop: Rightness, Wrongness + Appropriateness in an Upside-Down Abyss (KEYNOTE ADDRESS)

Complex conditions demands critical thinking. Turbulent times warrants heightened composure. Perplexing politics necessitates increased scrutiny. In our modern world the fabric seems to be unravelling in many ways and over numerous dimensions. An impressive period of relative peace and an arguably stable global order has been upended through escalating group think, expanding movements of the masses and an unprecedented vacuum of leadership. Tolerance and respect seems to be waning while polarization, populism and hatred rises around us. Plurality and diversity are viewed with growing...

Listen to the Land: Learning to Meaningfully Connect in an Increasingly Disconnected Era

Central to indigenous culture, values and vision in North America is an unswerving acknowledgement of the importance of the earth and our connectedness to the land (Sinclair 2013 i , 2014 ii , 2015 iii). Origin stories tightly weave our planet and its inhabitants into a single system where respect for nature and an intense land ethic inform steps and inspire action. It is inconceivable that harm inflicted to any part of the system does not bear consequences for the whole. Further, such understanding moves beyond the physical and the three dimensional. Time is a vital aspect of the...

"Strategies for Effective Lesson Planning" in University of Michigan CRLT GSI Guidebook, pp. 37-39

A lesson plan is the instructor's road map of what students need to learn and how it will be done effectively during the class time. Before you plan your lesson, you will first need to identify the learning objectives for the class meeting. Then, you can design appropriate learning activities and develop strategies to obtain feedback on student learning. http://crlt.umich.edu/sites/default/files/resource_files/GSI_Guidebook/GSI_Guidebook_37-39.pdf

Beyond "Mother Goddess and God the Father"

To ponder divine motherhood is not as natural and comfortable a task for an ecofeminist scholar as one might imagine. For me, it is actually quite a difficult task that requires addressing different layers of my own sociocultural fabric. I agree with Carol Christ and Judith Plaskow when they argue that the main challenge for feminist theological discourse is not the ways our different experiences have led to the construction of different imaginings of the divine, but in developing shared theological criteria. Christ (who wrote the first Goddess feminist theology) and Plaskow (who was the...

Cutri, R. M., Whiting, E. F., & Bybee, E. R. (2019). Knowledge Production and Power in an Online Critical Multicultural Teacher Education Course. Educational Studies, 1–12. https://doi.org/10.1080/00131946.2019.1645016

This reflexive inquiry explores a teacher educator's efforts to design opportunities for students to use their knowledge of social media and the Internet to contribute content to their online critical multicultural education course. Findings identify steps critical multicultural education pedagogues can take to design such opportunities: (a) identify contradictions in their practice, (b) take pedagogical risks, and (c) work with chronic tensions. Designing formal opportunities for students to identify and use content from social media and the Internet as learning resources and curricular...

A Communication and Instruction Approach to Embodied Cultural and Social Capital at a Public, 4- year University

In this study, we explore how students identify and navigate the social structure of higher education and how, in doing so, they communicatively (re)produce socializing norms. To this end, we draw upon the work of the late educational sociologist Pierre Bourdieu to outline a critical communication pedagogical understanding of institutional socialization at a public, 4-year university. We conducted focus groups with 36 college students to understand their perceptions of (in)appropriate communicative behaviors, norms, and attitudes in higher education. We then discuss the importance of their...

Chenoweth - The Pedagogy of Biblical Fiction

Partly inspired by the recent popularity of fan fiction, fictional short stories based on the Bible can be set as assessment tasks in theological education. A number of different story types can be utilised: recontextualisation ('missing scenes'), refocalisation ('alternative perspective'), genre emulation, and (possibly) expansion ('prequels and sequels'). The creative process involved in coming up with a fictional viewpoint actually encourages the student to function at the higher levels of Bloom's cognitive domain, particularly synthesis. In contrast with traditional theological essays,...
